How to Set Up Shadowsocks on Mac | ClashX & ShadowsocksX
Shadowsocks on Mac using ClashX or ShadowsocksX. This guide walks through how to set up shadowsocks on mac step by step, with beginners in mind.
SecureSS VPN runs on the Shadowsocks AES-256-GCM protocol, which combines strong security with high speed. Setup is simple — in most cases, registering a subscription link is all it takes.
Before You Start
If you’re using SecureSS VPN, keep the subscription link from your welcome email handy.
What You Need
- A SecureSS VPN account (subscription link).
- A Mac running macOS 12 or later.
- An internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
- A Shadowsocks client app.
Step 1: Install the App
On Mac, use ShadowsocksX-NG or ClashX, available from GitHub or via Homebrew.
Recommended Clients by Platform
| Platform | Recommended App | Where to Get It |
|---|---|---|
| Android | SecureSS VPN app / Shadowsocks | Official site / Google Play |
| iOS | Shadowrocket | App Store |
| Windows | Shadowsocks for Windows | GitHub |
| Mac | ShadowsocksX-NG / ClashX | GitHub / Homebrew |
Step 2: Register Your Subscription Link
Paste the SecureSS VPN subscription link into your client. This link is the URL we email you after signup, and it auto-populates server addresses, ports, ciphers and passwords.
If you prefer to configure manually, use the server details in the email. Always pick AES-256-GCM as the cipher.
Registering the Subscription Link
- Copy the subscription link from the SecureSS VPN email.
- Open your Shadowsocks client.
- Find "Subscriptions" or "Add server".
- Paste the link and tap "Update" or "Save".
- Server list appears — setup is done.
Step 3: Connect and Verify
Pick a server from the list and tap Connect. On first connect, approve the VPN profile installation prompt. Once connected, a VPN icon appears in the status bar.
Visit an IP-check site (e.g. whatismyip.com) and confirm your IP now shows Japan. If so, the tunnel is working.
Connection Checklist
- VPN icon visible in the status bar.
- An IP-check site reports a Japanese IP.
- Japanese sites (like Yahoo! Japan) load normally.
- Page load speed feels usable.
Troubleshooting
If things don’t connect, run down this list in order — most issues are fixed by simple config checks.
If you’re still stuck, contact SecureSS support. Let us know your device, OS, app and the error you’re seeing, and we’ll get you unblocked.
